Dib Beck

Early morning, great spotted Woodpecker, in the Yorkshire Dales - just fabulous. A gentle walk up to Dib Beck gill first thing, is good for the soul.

Since moving to Yorkshire (4 years ago) I'm only just becoming to get the Dales in the way that I got the Derbyshire countryside as a kid, the Lake District as a teenager and Teesdale in working life. Although born in Skipton by the skin of my teeth (my Mum wanted me to be able to play cricket for Yorkshire - I was keener on rugby) I have never really lived here before 2005, just a passing visitor to my retired parents.

Now, although a transitory inhabitant (as always), I'm living out of what was a large village (although it could hardly have been termed urban) in the Dales proper and watching the ISS fly over the other night, Yorkshire was soaking up through the turf. It was the exact feeling I got whilst standing out at night near the Twyfelfontein Lodge, Namibia
