Remembering my Father
We all knew Doug. He, like us all, had good and not so good attributes. His brilliance as a metallurgist is acknowledged by all. He was the scientific head of one of the biggest research organisations in the world during its most rapid and exciting period of development. It is so incredible to think of the change in the materials world that he over saw; the development of high temperature materials; the introduction of Titanium; the start of composites; the development of Quality Control systems that the world had never needed or thought of before the development of the jet engine. It required thinking the unthinkable and often doing the unlikely.
